After picking up your welcome bag at our registration counter, you are invited to join us for a welcome reception. Food and drink will be served in the foyer outside the lecture halls, which gives you an excellent opportunity for the first introductions and discussions at EXRS 2018.

TOWN HALL RECEPTION & LJUBLJANA SIGHTSEEING (Monday evening)

The mayor of the city of Ljubljana Mr. Zoran Janković will address the guests of the EXRS 2018 conference at the Town Hall, which is located in the center of the old town. After a short reception, you are invited to join a guided walking tour through the old town of Ljubljana.

PUBLIC LECTURE (Tuesday 8 p.m.)

on Tuesday evening a public lecture will be given by prof. dr. Alexander Föhlisch from Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin and University of Potsdam. This is what he will talk about:

Beating the complexity of matter by the selectivity of X-rays

X-rays contribute greatly to gain insight to crucial scientific questions. How can switching for information technologies becomes more efficient or how is rate and selectivity in chemistry influenced on the level of atomic constituents. This helps to identify limiting steps in the harvesting of light and energy conversion. Underlying is the rapid evolution of accelerator based X-ray sources, where the selectivity of X-ray spectroscopy gives a view of matter atom-by-atom.

EXCURSION (Wednesday 12:30)

On Wednesday afternoon we will visit the coast of Slovenia. We will meet in the court at 12:30. There you can pick up your lunch pack and board one of the buses. First, we will visit Sečovlje Salina Natural park, where we will learn about the salt-making and the environment there. Our next stop will be the beautiful town of Piran. We will take a short guided walk through the old town and after that there will be plenty of time for exploring on your own, trying the local specialties or even for a swim.

Detailed programme

This excursion is not included in the conference fee. Its cost is 40EUR per person.

CONFERENCE DINNER (Thursday 8 p.m.)

Conference dinner will be held in the yard of the Ljubljana Castle (or inside the castle in case of rain) on Thursday evening. You are invited to come to discuss and reflect back on the conference in a more relaxed setting.

The Ljubljana castle is one of the main attractions of the city and offers an amazing view.

As it lies on top of a hill we recommend using the funicular from the old town or a taxi. The funicular starts from Krekov trg in the old town, just behind the open market. You can reach it on foot or using bus lines 2, 13 or 20. One way ticket for the funicular costs 2.20EUR (1.50EUR for students), and return 4.00EUR (3.00EUR for students). Last run is at 12pm.

There are also several pathways leading up the hill. A hike from the city center to the castle takes about 10–15 minutes with a 80 m ascend.
